A sheep-shearing competition which has been the centre of rural life for years has been scrapped over concerns the clippers may harm the sheep.
Farmers today blasted animal welfare activists who claimed the animals were being hurt by the electric clippers which nip them during the shearing.
Shearers from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand flock to the annual Kent contest in a bid to become the fastest to shear an animal.
