MAD COW DISEASE IN SPAIN

Two men died in Castilla y León (Spain) due to cow disease. The dead bodies of a 41 and 50 year-old men were found in December 2007 and January 2008 but they haven't been reported until now.

The last case in Spain was in 2005 when a 26 year-old women died due to mad cow disease.

DONKEY MEAT IN SPAIN

In Catalonia (Spain) there exists a tradition to promote the consumption of donkey meat. Some associations are trying to stop this new and still small "trend" that breeds donkeys for human consumption.
The tradition consists in remember their ancestors who had to ate donkey meat in order to survive in war times.

ADOPTION, THE FIRST OPTION


Every year between 100.000 and 500.000 dogs and cats are abandoned in Spain.

The journalist Melisa Tuya (Madrid) created in 2004 "animals for Adoption", a blog announcing dogs and cats that need a new home. Thanks to that idea hundreds of animals are today alive and found a new home. She received the "Blasillo" prize for inventiveness in Internet. She announced that the 10.000 € of the prize will go to the ANAA association. (National Association of the Friends of Animals) (web in English, German, Spanish)

SLAUGHTERHOUSES IN SPAIN

Recorded for the first time illegal procedures in north-Spain slaughterhouses with rabbits, pigs, calves and lambs.

-Rabbits killed when still conscious.
-Pigs eating their feces because of starvation.
-Rabbits full of urine and feces from the ones above.
-Etc.

Every year in Spain 573 million chickens are killed, 39 millions pigs, 35 million hens, 61 million rabbits, almost 3 million cows and 19 million lambs and sheeps.
